Evelyn was a devoted wife and mother. She was born to Dora and Joe Powell of Granitville, S.C.. She attended Lavell McCampbell High high school. In 1953 she married Jimmy Otis Harris. Jimmy joined the Augusta Police Department and was shot to death in the line of duty during a domestic disturbance call by a 14 year old black boy on January 18, 1970. Evelyn remarried on 12 May 1971 to another police officer Walter R. Austin. They enjoyed almost 33 years of wedded bliss. During this time she served as a court secretary for Recorders Court in Augusta, Georgia. After marrying Walter, she was employed by Wells Fargo as an Assistant Manager, Human Resources Manager from 1973 until her death in March 2004. Evelyn was the rock that I leaned on. She was the wind beneath my wings. She was not only my wife, she was my best friend. I love her more today than yesterday, but less than tomorrow. When asked how long we were married my answer was always "Not long enough".
