Joan was a teacher, master teacher of mathematics and consultant in York Region and authored many mathematics textbooks for grades K-8. Her outstanding contributions to elementary mathematics education resulted in her receiving the Descartes Medal from University of Waterloo in 1974. Joan was actively involved in professional associations including the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education (former president) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Joan proudly obtained a B.A. from Queens University after many years of taking courses during summers and by correspondence all while teaching full-time and raising a family of three children with her husband Herbert Errington Routledge (1911-2007).

Joan resided in the house she and Herbert built themselves in King Township and spent her summers at their cottage near Parry Sound. Joan is survived by three children, Doug (Sue), Rick (Louise), and Pat (Will), four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Personal Notes

Dear Doug
I noticed the article in the Whig last week and wanted to pass on our condolances to you and your family. You taught my 3 children at LaSalle, and you were always kind & supportive, especially when their father had his heart attack & surgery.
Steven, Karen and Scott remember you well.
Your Mother sounds like she was a remarkable woman.
