How It Works

When you create a Will or legal document at PartingWishes.com, you can designate up to 20 different Keyholders®. Your chosen Keyholders® will be given the trust and power to unlock specific information within your account such as health care directives, funeral wishes, final messages, uploaded files, Power of Attorney, or Last Will and Testament.

You can also implement security mechanisms to prevent premature access to these documents. The entire process of creating your Will and other legal documents at PartingWishes.com is seamless and iterative, meaning you can continue to make changes until you're happy with the final product.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's very easy, and requires no Internet or web programming skills.  You step through a simple question and answer wizard that includes questions about the required content and the structure that you would like to use for your web page.  By following the instructions provided, you can add text, pictures, graphics, audio and video, making as many changes as you wish until you are satisfied with your web page.

Your MyLife™ web page is designed to be a tribute to you after you have died, where friends and loved ones can submit their thoughts and memories.  It will go online after it has been unlocked by your trusted Keyholder® using their secure ID, and following an optional delay period of any number of hours or days specified by you.

The MyLife™ service is designed as an online tribute to your life in the same way as an obituary in a newspaper.  It is possible for you to submit an obituary about yourself in a newspaper while you are still alive, but generally this is regarded as being distasteful, particularly for your family and loved ones.

Your Keyholder® should be the one to unlock information such as your funeral wishes (MyFuneral™), your prewritten messages (MyMessages™) and your MyLife™ web page after you have passed away.  You should block any attempts to unlock this information before that time.

Your trusted Keyholder® will request publication of your MyLife™ web page.  As soon as this request is received we will automatically notify you of this request by email and you will be given an opportunity to block the publication of your web page.  If, after a period of time determined by you, we have received no order to block the publication, then the web page will go live.

It is important that you trust your Keyholders® .  Although safeguards are in place to prevent the premature publication of your MyLife™ web page, you should not expect any of your Keyholders® to request publication before the appropriate time.

Anybody visiting your web page could make a contribution.  Optionally, you can specify that your MyLife™ web page be "moderated".  In this case, one of your designated Keyholders® must view and approve all contributions before they will appear on the web page.  They can even choose to be notified automatically by email whenever someone adds a photo, personal note or other memorabilia to your MyLife™ web page.  Full instructions for how to do this are provided to your Keyholder® when they unlock your MyLife™ web page after you have passed away.

The MyLife™ service allows you to step through a web page creation wizard, upload text, graphics, audio, video, and choose other design elements.  You can make unlimited updates to your web page before it goes online.  You can also designate your own personal "Keyholders®", who with their unique ID can unlock your MyLife™ web page and publish it online once you have passed away.  Your web page will be maintained for a given number of years after your death, as specified by you.

The MyLife™ service is available free of charge with all membership packages.  See our Products & Prices page for more details.

Our goal is to have all of your friends, loved ones and future generations visit your web page for years to come.  Unlike other online memorial services, no advertising banners will ever appear on your web page, and your web address will be personalized.  In fact, we let you choose your own web address, such as "https://www.partingwishes.com/memorials/JohnSmith".

All of our data is securely stored in a highly encrypted format on database servers in the USA. To protect against catastrophic data loss, daily backups are performed on each of our servers to locations in Canada and the U.S. Hence, if any one of our servers experienced technical difficulties, the data would not be at risk.

Furthermore, physical protection of our primary systems includes:

  • Fire detection and fire suppression systems with dry pipe pre-action sprinkler systems
  • N + 1 redundant power supplies, providing dual power feeds and backup batteries, water coolant systems and generators
  • N + 1 redundant climate control, providing primary and backup chiller units, cooling towers, and water storage
  • Local network operations center (NOC) for monitoring all data center operations
  • 24x7 monitoring and support of network connection and server availability
  • 24x7 uniformed guard service with interior and exterior closed-circuit television surveillance
  • Electronic access at all data center entrances, including biometric hand scanners
  • Electronic key management systems and individually keyed cabinets

As you can see, we take the security and privacy of all of our member information very seriously.

PartingWishes.com has funding set aside to support the cost of hosting member information (including MyLife™   web pages) well into the future based on today's prices. This money is used as an insurance policy to ensure that even if PartingWishes.com ceases to accept new members, that existing member information will still be maintained. At today's prices (which we anticipate to fall) even if PartingWishes.com received no additional revenue, hosting of member data is secured for at least a generation. Our intention is to increase this fund to support ongoing costs for several generations into the future. It is of course difficult to forecast what will happen in the future, but as long as there is the concept of websites and an Internet, we will be able to maintain your MyLife™   web page online. We would also hope to evolve any MyLife™   web pages submitted to take advantage of any new technologies. Rest assured, we have every intention of being here to stay!

Most of our services are completely international.  They can be used by anyone in any country in the world.

Services such as MyFuneral™, MyMessages™, MyLifeLocker™, MyVault™, MyLife™ and MyMemorials™ do not create legal documents and make no assumptions about your country of residence.

In the US, Canada, England and Wales, we have worked extensively to ensure that the legal documents created by the MyWill™, MyExpatWill™ and MyLivingWill™ services are up to date with the laws in all of the states in the United States and the provinces in Canada, including: Alabama, Alaska, Alberta, Arizona, Arkansas, British Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Manitoba, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ohio, Oklahoma, Ontario, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Prince Edward Island, Québec, Rhode Island, Saskatchewan, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Yukon.  Hence, these services can be used to generate legal documents in any state in the United States with the exception of Louisiana, and any Canadian Province or Territory, and in England and Wales in the United Kingdom.

Furthermore, the MyPowerOfAttorney™ service is available for all States in the United States except Louisiana, and for all Provinces and Territories in Canada. In the UK, power of attorney forms are provided free of charge by the government.

Note that even in unsupported areas, there is value in stepping through the wizards provided in these services in preparation for a consultation with an attorney.  It is strongly recommended that residents outside of the above supported states/provinces/countries seek legal advice even after completing the wizards. Local laws in these unsupported areas have not been considered in the structure of the legal documents.

If you have any doubts about the legal standing of any documents in your jurisdiction, feel free to seek legal counsel in your area to have your documents reviewed.

There is a considerable amount of information included in the on-line help of the MyLife™ wizard.  This will answer most of the common questions regarding the steps included in creating your own web page.

For information about the other services available, or about PartingWishes.com in general, you can browse this website or send an email to [email protected].  We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Make a Will online – 4 steps, 20 minutes, only £24.95

Most UK adults do not have a Will. It's unfortunate because every adult needs a Will and you shouldn't wait until some time in the future.

A Will should be written whilst you are young, and updated throughout your life. Fortunately, now there are great options to make a Will online.

Traditionally, making a Will was an expensive and inconvenient process. It involved booking an appointment with a solicitor, co-ordinating schedules with a spouse or partner, and then making a follow up appointment for the document signing.
